Day 83 - MechInc Story

MechInc Story
Matthew Ryan Fischer

Mech Incorporated was formed from former military and special ops agents that had a flair for cutting-edge technologies.  What they set out to be was the best of the best, who kept a watchful eye on what the other side was developing, and constant attention to innovation and creation, making sure the best of what the future had to offer came today.  They sought out new technologies in any field and found ways to make them applicable to their business.  They were not bound by traditional thinking and explored myth and magic as much as they applied science to their craft.  They were the elite of the elite and they were for hire.  Space age Pinkerton Agents – protection, detection and extraction.
MechInc. started as men and women performing important and dangerous tasks that no one else was equipped to handle.  What they were to become was sort of a mad science experiment run by assassins gone wrong.
Originally two distinct subcultures developed within the organization – the MechTechs and the CyberMechs.  The MechTechs used the latest in external technologies while the CyberMechs believed in turning themselves into weapons.  The CyberMech division proved to be more effective and despite some initial resistance the overall culture within the organization slowly shifted towards cybernetic and nanotech enhancements.  It got to the point that some of the Mechs were hardly human at all.  They had their hearts removed as precautionary measures.  No one wanted to be in the heat of battle and take a bullet or bit of shrapnel and that be that.  Pumps and gears and microchips were installed with backups and redundancies.  A big enough explosion would still wipe a Mech off the face of the earth, but the little things, the pointless deaths, could now be avoided.
It was when the Mechs became true mechanical killing machines that the shift happened.  Fear was no longer an obstacle.  Failure was minimized and abilities were mechanized.  There was very little need for human ingenuity or improvisation skills during an operation.  Mechs became the most efficient killers on the planet.  When you’re good at killing, you are hired to kill a lot.  When you are extremely good at killing, killing is the only thing you are hired to do.  Despite the Mechs being more machine than man, there were still the unfortunate remnants of unpleasant human emotions and instincts.  Some Mechs suffered PTSD and other pangs of human conscience.  Most did not.  Trained and capable, most just embraced this new life.  They became ruthless, unemotional, and systematic and in the worst cases, addicted.  There is little worse than a highly trained highly efficient killing machine addicted to the chemical rush that comes with killing other humans.
MechInc. was a global organization that knew no boundaries nor borders and owed no particular political allegiance to any state or particular party.  They were insulated and protected as there were always nations or leaders who wanted to take advantage of their particular skill set.  The Mechs bounced from one nation another, doing whatever dirty work needed doing.  But they left a list of enemies wherever they went nearly as long as the list of the dead that flowed from their activities.  They began killing too many people and wearing out their welcome wherever they went.
Soon the suitors grew less and less.  More and more countries began closing their doors.  Some even organized their own kill squads to come after the Mechs.  The world was becoming a dangerous place, even for highly trained killing machines.
They owners or founders or leaders of MechInc. were faceless, nameless men and women.  Their organization was intentionally reclusive and private.  When the time came with mounting pressure and too many enemies at the gates, the founders just pulled the plug.  Mechs had no idea, but there was a kill switch imbedded in all the fancy new mechanics inside their body.  They were simply shut off.  And then the former leaders were able to just disappear and resurface later elsewhere when the time was right to begin again.
